Silver is one of the seven metals of alchemy (gold, silver, mercury, copper, lead, iron & tin). The symbol for silver is also associated wth the moon in astrology. Silver was believed to have feminine qualities and associated with purity.

The Crescent Moon is a witchcraft symbol of the Goddess, and therefore usually worn only by women. The word Crescent comes from the Latin 'creare' which means to create. This is a symbol of female fertility, and the ability of women to create life.

The Crscent Moon can be represented by the waxing moon (pointing to the left) or the waning moon (pointing to the right).
- The waxing moon is the Maiden and represents enchantment, inception, expansion, the promise of new beginnings, birth, youth and youthful enthusiasm.
- The waning moon is the Crone (or Wise Woman) and represents wisdom, repose, death and endings.This was the most feared, least understood aspect of the Moon goddess. This is the aspect that was called the Hag, the Terrible Mother, the Witch, the Wise One. This aspect of the cycle deals with death, the end of cycles, and the mysteries surrounding re-birth.
