The Scythe is one of the attributes of personified Death. This image came about in the Middle Ages, a largely agrarian society so it not surprising to find agricultural motifs in their representation of death.

In early renderings, the Reaper is shown holding arrows, darts, spears or crossbows. These are the weapons he uses to strike down his victim. Over time, a scythe came to replace these other instruments of death. A scythe was a tool used to reap, or cut, grain or grass. Bringing this imagery to death was a natural extension of an agrarian society in which harvesting, done in the fall, represented the death of another year. Just as we harvest our crops, so does death harvest souls for their journey into the afterlife.

The Scythe has also other symbolic and magic uses: in Central and Eastern Europe bodies of persons suspected of vampirism were buried with the head facing the ground and with a scyth or sickle in the coffin.
You can also find Scythes during Slavonic weddings - the bridesman used to walk around the wedding retinue with a Scythe in order to scare away all evil spirits and bad charms.

But the Scythe, most of all, is an agricultural hand tool for mowing grass or reaping crops, still in use in certain parts of the World.
